Door locks are the first touchpoint of a hotel stay. A BLE Mesh door lock extends the same wireless room network to the door, enabling mobile keys, automatic privacy linkage and central audit - without running a new wired access system to every room.
Why BLE Mesh for the door
BLE Mesh lets battery-powered locks join the same wireless fabric that controls lighting, thermostat and curtains. The lock talks to the in-room BLE Mesh gateway, which bridges to the RCU and the PMS. Because BLE Mesh is low power and self-healing, locks stay connected even if one device drops.
Mobile key and check-in flow
- Front desk or app issues a credential tied to the reservation.
- The lock validates the mobile key over BLE on arrival.
- On check-out the PMS revokes the key and the lock returns to locked-default.
Linking the door to room privacy
When a guest engages the mechanical or electronic deadbolt, the lock reports a privacy state to the RCU, which suppresses housekeeping prompts and can hold the DND sign. This closes the loop between the door and the rest of the room without extra wiring.
- Are BLE Mesh locks secure?
- Yes when implemented with AES-CCM encryption and rolling keys, the same class of security used in Bluetooth mesh profiles. Credentials are issued per stay and revoked on check-out.
- What if the wireless network drops?
- The lock keeps its last valid credential locally and operates autonomously. Connectivity is needed for remote issuance and audit, not for local unlock.
- Can BLE locks work with an existing PMS?
- Yes, through a gateway that translates lock events into the PMS access interface, the same pattern used for KNX and wired systems.
