China is the world's largest source of hotel RCU and guest room control hardware, but capability varies widely. This checklist helps procurement and system integrators separate factories that can deliver a reliable, supportable system from those that only assemble boxes.
Protocol and integration maturity
Confirm the manufacturer supports the bus you need - KNX, RS-485/Modbus, BLE Mesh or PLC - and, critically, the integration path to your PMS/GRMS (BACnet, Modbus TCP, REST). Ask for a reference project on the same protocol, not just a datasheet.
Certifications and quality system
Look for CE, RoHS and, for KNX, KNX membership or certified products where claimed. An ISO 9001 system and a stable BOM matter more than a long feature list, because hotel projects live for years.
OEM, documentation and support
- Engineering drawings, configuration tools and commissioning guides in English.
- Spare-part policy and lead time for replacements years later.
- Willingness to support remote commissioning or train your local integrator.
Red flags
Vague integration claims, no reference on your protocol, refusal to share a configuration tool, or a price far below market with unspecified components. These usually surface as commissioning pain later.
- Is KNX membership required to buy KNX hardware?
- No, but a KNX member or certified partner gives you legitimate use of the KNX mark and access to ETS product data and conformance - valuable for export projects.
- What should I ask for as proof?
- A reference hotel on the same protocol and PMS, the configuration/commissioning tool, and the certification documents for the exact models quoted.
- How important is local support?
- Very. Even a perfect system needs commissioning. Choose a manufacturer that supports your integrator or offers remote commissioning.
