Lighting is the most visible part of a guest room, and the easiest to get wrong in a new-build hotel. KNX turns lighting from a set of switches into a programmable system where one press sets an entire mood. This guide covers how KNX lighting scene control works in hotel guest rooms, how it links with curtains and the RCU, and where the energy savings actually come from.
What a “scene” means in KNX
KNX scenes are pre-stored device states recalled by a single command. A guest room typically uses five: Entry (welcome), Reading, Sleep, Away (eco) and Cleaning (full brightness for housekeeping). Each scene stores dimmer levels, switch states and sometimes curtain positions, so one button — or one RCU event — sets the whole room at once.
Switching vs dimming: where DALI comes in
KNX handles on/off loads through switching actuators and dimming through 0-10V or DALI. For guest rooms with tunable lighting, DALI ballasts are wired to a KNX-DALI gateway so every luminaire is individually addressable: corridor step-lighting, bedside reading, vanity and ambient can all be dimmed and monitored from the same bus.
Linking scenes with the RCU, door and curtains
Scenes are not isolated. A KNX room controller ties them to real events: the door opening can trigger the Entry scene, card-insertion sets the welcome state, and check-out shifts the room to Away. Because curtains and HVAC share the same group addresses, one scene can dim lights, close blinds and set the thermostat together.
Energy saving without guest discomfort
Occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting let the system trim power automatically. If a room is unoccupied, lighting drops to a hold level; if daylight fills the window, electric lighting dims to match. The saving comes from removing “always-on” waste, not from dimming occupied rooms.
Frequently asked questions
- Can KNX scenes be changed across many rooms at once?
- Yes. Scenes are broadcast over KNX group addresses, so an entire floor or building can be re-themed with one command — useful for seasonal or brand-standard updates.
- Can existing light strips or fixtures be used with KNX?
- If the fixture has a controllable driver (0-10V, DALI or phase-cut), it connects through the matching KNX actuator; only passive fixtures need a replacement driver.
