How Hotel RCU Cuts Energy Costs: Lighting, HVAC & Card Power

The three levers a hotel RCU uses to cut energy: card-power occupancy, HVAC setback and lighting scenes - with realistic savings ranges.

A room control unit pays for itself through energy. The RCU automates the three biggest loads - lighting, HVAC and plugged-in devices - so they only run when the room is occupied and comfortable. Here is how the savings actually happen.

Card-power: the master switch

The energy-saving card switch cuts power to non-essential loads the moment a guest leaves. Remove the card and the RCU drops lighting, TV and sockets to off or standby, while keeping the minibar and emergency circuits live. This single action is the largest source of guest-room savings.

HVAC setback on vacancy

On card-remove or PIR timeout, the RCU moves the thermostat to setback: a milder cooling or heating setpoint that protects the room without conditioning it for nobody. On return, comfort is restored automatically. Savings of 15 to 30 percent on room HVAC are typical.

Lighting and scene control

Scenes ensure lights are never all on when not needed. Curtain logic can use daylight to reduce cooling load in summer and gain free heat in winter. Dimming in corridors via DALI or 0-10V trims standby waste.

Measuring the result

A GRMS dashboard shows per-room consumption, so engineering can spot a stuck relay or an always-on unit immediately. The RCU turns energy saving from a policy into a measured, enforceable system.

How much can a hotel RCU save?
Most projects see 10 to 30 percent reduction in guest-room energy, dominated by HVAC setback and card-power control, depending on climate and tariff.
Does card-power hurt guest comfort?
No. Comfort is restored on re-insertion, and the minibar, safe and emergency lighting stay live. Guests generally accept it as standard hotel behaviour.
Can savings be verified?
Yes. GRMS reporting compares consumption room by room and before versus after installation, giving a defensible payback figure.
