For hotel lighting, KNX and DALI are not competitors - they are a natural pair. KNX handles the building-wide logic, scenes and integration, while DALI drives individual luminaires with smooth dimming and central lamp monitoring. Together they give guests effortless light control and give engineering a wiring and maintenance advantage.
KNX for logic, DALI for luminaires
KNX is excellent at coordinating scenes across a room - bedside, bathroom, entry, curtain and HVAC. DALI excels at controlling each luminaire individually on a single low-voltage bus. A KNX DALI gateway bridges the two: KNX sends a scene command, the gateway translates it into DALI level commands for every fixture on that loop.
What you gain in a guest room
- Smooth dimming: DALI drives LEDs from 1 to 100 percent without flicker.
- Per-fixture monitoring: the system reports a failed lamp before a guest complains.
- Fewer relays: dimming happens in the driver, so panel space and heat shrink.
- Corridor and public areas: DALI loops cover long runs with simple two-wire bus.
Wiring and commissioning
Each room typically uses one DALI loop for all guest-room luminaires, terminated at a DALI driver bank. The KNX DALI gateway is commissioned once per room type, then cloned across identical rooms. This keeps per-room wiring to a single DALI bus plus the KNX line already serving switches and sensors.
- Do I need both KNX and DALI in every room?
- For premium and new-build hotels, yes - the combination gives individual dimming and lamp monitoring. For budget rooms, KNX switching or 0-10V dimming may be enough.
- Is DALI more expensive than relay switching?
- DALI drivers cost more per point than a simple switch, but you save on panel space, cabling and maintenance. The total installed cost is often comparable on dimmed lighting.
- Can DALI report a burnt lamp?
- Yes. DALI queries each ballast, so the GRMS can raise a lamp-failure alarm centrally - a major advantage for hotels that want proactive maintenance.
