Hotel Door Signs & DND/MUR: Wiring and GRMS Integration

How hotel door signs, DND and MUR buttons integrate with the RCU and GRMS: wiring options, privacy linkage and housekeeping workflow.

Talk to Hotekey

The door sign and its DND / MUR buttons are small components with an outsized effect on housekeeping efficiency. Done right, they link the guest room to the GRMS so the right room is cleaned at the right time without knocking on a occupied door.

What the door sign shows

A typical sign displays Do Not Disturb and Make Up Room, driven by two buttons inside the room. Modern signs also show a welcome message or room number. The RCU controls which indicator is lit based on button state and PMS room status.

Wiring options

  • Wired: dry-contact buttons and a sign on the KNX or RS-485 bus - most reliable for new builds.
  • Wireless: BLE Mesh buttons and sign for renovation where pulling wire to the door is undesirable.

Linkage to GRMS and housekeeping

DND state suppresses housekeeping prompts and can hold the door lock privacy. MUR clears DND and queues the room for cleaning. The GRMS board reflects real-time status, so supervisors dispatch staff to rooms that are actually ready.

Should DND/MUR be wired or wireless?
Wired is preferred for new builds; wireless BLE Mesh is ideal for retrofit where door wiring is disruptive.
Does DND lock out housekeeping entirely?
It signals do-not-disturb to the GRMS. Engineering can still override for safety, but routine cleaning is deferred until the guest clears it.
Can the sign show the room number?
Yes. Many signs accept a room-number input from the RCU or PMS during check-in.
