The complete guide to guest room control (GRCS): components, wired vs wireless architecture, offline reliability and PMS integration — from a China-based manufacturer with hotel projects across Asia and the Middle East.
Get a System ProposalA guest room control system (GRCS) is the network that connects every electrical device in a hotel room — lighting, air-conditioning, curtains, door lock, service buttons and energy management — so they run as one coordinated system instead of separate gadgets.
In a HOTEKEY system, each room has a Room Control Unit (RCU) as its local brain. Guest-facing smart panels, sensors and the hotel PMS send commands to the RCU, and the RCU switches the actual loads through a safe low-voltage bus. All rooms report to HOTEKEY Cloud, which gives hotel management real-time room status and energy reports.
HOTEKEY (Guangzhou Hotekey Electronics Co., Ltd.) builds complete wired and wireless guest room control systems for new-build and retrofit hotels, exported to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, Russia and Africa since 2013.
A complete HOTEKEY guest room control system has six building blocks: the RCU host, guest-facing smart panels, load-control modules, thermostats, curtain motors and the cloud / PMS layer.
The embedded controller installed in each room; manages lighting, AC, curtains, door display and service buttons through a safe low-voltage bus.
Guest-facing weak-current switches and scene panels, including KNX panels (ED / EZ / ER / EX / EMT / ET series) and touch screens.
4 / 8 / 12 / 17-way 16 A relay modules, 0-10 V dimmers, dry-contact modules and FCU fan-coil modules.
Room thermostats and knob panels for precise air-conditioning control; one RCU can serve up to 16 thermostats.
Open-close and quiet curtain motors, including the BMD900E Tuya Zigbee version, for motorised shading.
HOTEKEY Cloud plus interfaces to major PMS platforms for real-time room status and energy reports.
Every command — from a wall panel, a keycard switch, a door sensor or the PMS — reaches the room's RCU, which runs the control logic locally and switches the loads immediately; cloud and PMS links are used for status, reporting and remote scenes.
A typical check-in flow: the PMS marks the room occupied and sends a welcome scene; the RCU turns on selected lights, sets the AC to the default temperature and opens the curtains. When the guest leaves, the service mode or keycard removal triggers an energy-saving scene that switches off lighting and sets back the air-conditioning.
Because the logic runs locally in the RCU, the room keeps working even if the internet drops — a deliberate design decision for hospitality reliability.
Wired bus systems (RS-485 / Modbus, KNX) are the first choice for new-build hotels; wireless BLE Mesh or Zigbee 3.0 systems are the first choice for retrofit projects because they avoid re-cabling guest rooms.
Yes. HOTEKEY room control runs its logic locally in the RCU: if the network briefly drops, lights, air-conditioning and switches keep working, and the room returns to cloud control once reconnected.
This local-first design is what separates a hotel-grade control system from consumer smart-home kits, which usually stop responding when the cloud is unreachable.
Yes. Every HOTEKEY RCU connects to HOTEKEY Cloud and supports interfaces with major PMS platforms (Opera / Fidelio and chain-hotel APIs) for real-time room status and energy reports.
Typical PMS-linked flows include check-in welcome scenes, check-out all-off, housekeeping room status and maintenance alerts.
Reference projects include Guangzhou Huangpu New Town Four Points by Sheraton (168 rooms), Zhuangduo Hotel Xintang Guangzhou (92-room BLE Mesh retrofit with no re-cabling), Mehood Lestie Hotel Shitan Zengcheng (121 rooms, including voice control), Xicheng Hotel Apartment Shenzhen (249 keys across 13 room types on one modular RCU architecture) and a hotel PMS integration project in Mongolia.
Overseas projects are delivered through the HOTEKEY model of a China head office working with local system integrators, such as the Luang Prabang Wanda Meihua Hotel project in Laos.
