A hotel RCU (Room Control Unit) is the brain of a smart guest room. It ties lighting, climate, curtains and service functions into one logic-driven system that guests operate with a switch and engineers monitor from a central console. This article explains how an RCU controller works and the four functions it always delivers — whether the room is wired (KNX / RS-485) or wireless (BLE Mesh).
RCU in one sentence
The RCU reads inputs (switch presses, card insertion, door contact, sensors) and drives outputs (lights, AC, curtains, indicators) according to pre-set scenes and rules — then reports room status upstream to the GRMS.
The 4 core functions
1. Lighting control
One-touch master-off, dual/multi-control from bedside and entrance, scene modes (welcome / reading / sleep) and backlit switches for night use. In wired rooms this runs over KNX or RS-485; in wireless rooms over BLE Mesh.
2. HVAC control
The RCU manages the thermostat, fan-coil or VRV setpoint, and — critically — cuts HVAC to eco when the guest removes the key card. This single rule is one of the largest energy savers in a hotel.
3. Curtain / blind control
Motorized curtains open on "welcome" and close on "sleep", and can be tied to daylight or scene buttons, improving both comfort and perceived luxury.
4. Service & status (DND / MUR)
Do-Not-Disturb and Make-Up-Room signals, door status and card-power state are sent to the GRMS so housekeeping and front desk see room state in real time.
Wired vs wireless implementation
| Function | Wired (KNX / RS-485) | Wireless (BLE Mesh) |
|---|---|---|
| Signaling | Bus cable | Radio mesh |
| Load switching | Actuators on bus | Local BLE controllers at loads |
| Best fit | New build, long-life | Renovation, no rewire |

Why it matters to the owner
Beyond guest comfort, the RCU is the杠杆点 for energy savings and labor efficiency. Linking HVAC and lighting to occupancy and card-power, plus remote fault detection, directly cuts opex. See how hotel RCU cuts energy costs.
Frequently asked questions
- Is an RCU the same as a smart switch?
- No — a smart switch is one device; the RCU is the room-level controller coordinating all of them plus HVAC, curtains and service.
- Can RCU work without internet?
- Yes. Room logic runs locally; internet/GRMS is only needed for remote monitoring and PMS integration.
- Do guests notice the RCU?
- Only the benefits — one-touch scenes, comfortable climate, working DND. The controller itself is behind the wall or in the ceiling.
